Center for Responsible Lending

Founded in 2002, The Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) works to ensure a fair and inclusive financial marketplace. From housing crises to banking and industry malpractice, too many sections of the American public have been dishonest, adopting harmful lending practices. CRL works to make people accountable for their lending and borrowing practices and cultivate a financial marketplace that is sustainable.

CRL is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that specifically works to aid Americans in response to deceptive marketing, predatory lending techniques and egregious loans. In addressing, student loans, credit cards, consumer finance, debt collection and more, CRL confronts a wide range of money lending issues, presenting them in ways that are compelling and accessible in order to encourage policymakers to make real change.

Recently the CRL has had a huge influence in lobbying lawmakers to draft new legislation on payday loans. In addition, the CRL had heavy say in opposing the Mortgage Choice Act in 2013 that threatened the safety of home loans. The CRL also played an important role in the aftermath of Operation Choke Point – a Department of Justice investigation into industries associated with a higher risk of fraud and money laundering.

With the Trump administration having made attempts to reel back regulations on lending, the CRL has redoubled its efforts to cultivate a financial marketplace that is sustainable and fair.
